Suburbia Rising Workshops

New info! Please read:

Due to Covid-19 distancing guidelines in WA state, SRS3 is greatly reducing our in-person options and developing effective, interactive online offerings. Please contact us to discuss options.

From Idea to Action (8 Week Course, approximately 20 hours)

The cornerstone of Suburbia Rising is an intensive but friendly educational multi-part workshop for “newbie” activists distressed by the state of the world but unsure how to change it. Rooted in an anti-oppression framework and designed to give participants a working knowledge of systemic injustice and a basic toolkit, this program moves its attendees from good intentions to competent, effective actions. Our goal is to remove the barriers and excuses to civic engagement and truly inclusive organizing.

Stepping Into Allyship (90-120 minutes)

Our most popular introductory workshop, Stepping Into Allyship explores the four cornerstones of becoming a competent and reliable ally by breaking down examples of effective and ineffective allyship. Participants grow on both the individual and organizational level, and should leave with an understanding of their next actionable steps. The 120-minute version of this workshop also includes an important discussion on building the stamina for ongoing work.

Deepening Racial Awareness (90-120 minutes)

This follow-up workshop builds off of Stepping Into Allyship by challenging participants to deepen their own personal and systemic awareness of racism and oppression. We build shared social justice vocabulary and work through a historic understanding of racial oppression to learn the importance of becoming more than an ally, but an accomplice.

From Microaggressions to Major Offenses (120 minutes)

What is a microaggression and why does it matter? We answer both those questions in this interactive workshop, then build off that understanding to develop our own tools to interrupt everyday bigotry and stand up for what is right.

#BLM365 (45-60 minutes)

Originally developed by SRS3 for the Edmonds School District, #BLM365 works to deepen understanding about the importance of Black Lives Matter Week of Action in schools. Interactive exercises lead participants to develop their “Personal Why,” before we teach two methods for ongoing anti-racist classroom work, share resources and hold space for collaboration.

Speak Up! (45-60 minutes)

Based on Teaching Tolerance materials, SRS3 facilitates this multi-age curriculum designed to help students, teachers and everyone else in the room to interrupt everyday bigotry.
