Who We Are

Founder

Courtney Wooten

Founder Courtney Wooten grew up in Berkeley and Oakland, where the legacy of hippies and Black Panthers made civic engagement feel as natural as breathing. Courtney has an extensive background in social sciences, communication and creative expression. As an undergraduate, she served as the Social Director for the Queer-Straight Social/Political Alliance and co-founded her university’s first and only multicultural-interest sorority. She is a polished presenter, writer and moderator, an alumna of Stanford University and a Ron Brown Scholar.

More recently, Courtney has served as an equity consultant in the Pacific NW focusing on educational spaces, family engagement and faith communities. She serves as a Lead Organizer with the Edmonds Neighborhood Action Coalition, sits on two Snohomish County Commissions, and is a Board member for the Creative Dance Center. She has been awarded four grants from The Edmonds Diversity Commission and a Community Grant from the Group Health Foundation for the 2020 Beloved Community Morning Program: A Tribute to Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Edmonds Center for the Arts.

Courtney’s current advocacy work centers on racial justice and intersectional feminism. She is a current student in the MA Social Justice and Community Organizing program at Prescott College.

Suburbia Rising also contracts with other trusted and vetted local trainers and activists to meet the specific learning goals of our clients, and to facilitate large gatherings and longer workshops.
